In the late 1990s the State of California Parks Department purchased over 3,100 acres in the southeast corner of Alameda County along the Tesla-Corral Hollow Road. The original plan was to expand the existing adjacent Carnegie State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA) off-highway vehicle (OHV) park into what became known as Tesla Park. This would cause devastating environmental impacts from OHV use on the unique and fragile Tesla park land.
The alternative goal was to establish Tesla as a non-motorized, low-impact natural and cultural resource reserve. In 2021, State legislation was enacted which provided that the Tesla park land could never be opened for motorized recreation nor be a SVRA.
Now, the work continues to establish Tesla as a nature and cultural Reserve
Friends of Tesla Park is an alliance of individuals and organizations dedicated to protecting the biologically unique and culturally significant landscape known as Tesla as a nature and cultural Reserve.
