Tesla has one of the highest levels of biodiversity in the State according to Biological Assessment
The comprehensive report, Reserve Classification of California State Parks Alameda-Tesla Property, Alameda County, California based on an Assessment of Biological Resources and the Effects of Recreational Activities on those Resources, documents the regional and statewide significance of Tesla and its role in meeting priority conservation objectives.
A key finding:
- 53 special-status plants and animals, including 3 with suitable habitat in Tesla and documented occurrences nearby.
- 45 special-status (rare) plants, with an additional 74 locally rare watchlist plants detected, or expected in Tesla based on nearby occurrences.
- 9 sensitive natural communities.
The report confirms that given Tesla’s irreplaceable biodiversity and regional ecological values that the best classification option available to protect Tesla’s 3,100-acres while still providing low-intensity public access is for the California Department of Parks and Recreation Commission to classify Tesla as a State Reserve.
